Immunodeficiency virus in cats

Feline immunodeficiency virus (VIC/FIV) is a retrovirus, a type of virus that is a common cause of death in the cat population worldwide.

It was opened in 1986 in the USA. Since then, this virus has been detected in all countries.

The infection rate varies from 1/6 (healthy cats) to 14% (sick cats). VIC is rare, but it is found in purebred cats.

Clinical signs

A cat infected with the VIC virus has not shown any clinical signs of the disease for many years, being a source of infection for its relatives. Gradually, the virus affects the cat's immune system, which contributes to the development of many chronic diseases and opportunistic infections. Inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity are often observed in sick animals.

Infected cats are also characterized by the following chronic diseases: diarrhea, pneumonia, skin diseases, sinusitis, certain eye diseases, neurological disorders, etc.

Maternal vaccination may affect the results of HIV tests based on the detection of antibodies before the age of 2 months.

Prevention

Diagnosis of VIC: a blood test to detect antibodies against the virus. All cats of the kennel must be checked for the presence of this virus, infected animals cannot be kept in the kennel. A kitten under the age of 6 months born to an infected or vaccinated female may have antibodies against the VIC virus in her blood, but she is not a carrier of the virus. A kitten with a positive VIC test should be checked again 6 months after the first analysis.
