One day, while camping, I went to shoot ducks.

I instinctively guessed a good day and prepared all the hunting gear in advance. Indeed, my premonition did not deceive me, and by morning the weather had completely changed. As soon as it got light, I was already rushing to familiar places, hoping to meet new guests who had arrived, perhaps during the cold weather, during which I had never gone hunting. Like a fox looking at grapes, I looked at the green-headed drakes, who also watched me for a long time. Of course, trying to approach them directly, without any cover, was in vain; I knew very well that they would not let me within two hundred paces, so I really saw the eye, but did not take a tooth. Finally, a happy thought came to me: go somewhere far away to the opposite shore of the flood, on which a thick vine grew, and, hiding in it, shoot into the air from one trunk. Maybe, I thought, the startled ducks would somehow swoop down on me.

Said and done. After walking about half a verst from this place, I went straight through the flood to the other side of it. Moving from hummock to hummock, and sometimes through water that was almost waist-deep in other places, I soon reached the other bank and, entering the vine, actually approached the ducks about two hundred paces and, choosing a good spot, fired into the air. Startled by this shot, the ducks got up and, making a circle, flew to another flood that was on the other side of the river, heading their way straight at me.

My heart began to beat violently, and my hands began to shake as if in a fever, when I saw that they would have to fly over my head. I hid even more in the bush, fearing that I might somehow be noticed by the sharp-eyed birds. But these fears were in vain, the whole herd was rushing straight at me, fifty paces from the ground. When it was almost over my head, I jumped out of my ambush and, without hesitation, fired a charge at the nearest drake, which flew to the ground like a sheaf. Like a kicking dog, I rushed over, picking her up from the ground.
